How to Use a Compass for Qibla
A Qibla compass is only as useful as its heading reference. Calculate the correct bearing first, then make sure the compass is stable and that you understand whether it uses true or magnetic north.
With a phone compass
Enable location and orientation access, hold the phone level and turn slowly. If the heading jumps, step away from cars, steel furniture, speakers, chargers and other sources of magnetic interference.
With a traditional compass
Place the compass flat. Let the needle settle, rotate the housing so its north marker matches the needle, then identify the calculated Qibla degree on the dial. Magnetic declination may need to be accounted for if your bearing is referenced to true north.
Confirm the heading
Once aligned, identify a distant fixed object in that direction. This gives you a stable reference and avoids repeatedly relying on a phone sensor indoors.
Use the live Qibla finder for your exact position, or choose a published bearing from the city directory.
