QIBLA GUIDE

How to Find the Qibla Direction

The Qibla is the direction from your position toward the Kaaba in Makkah. The most dependable method combines a calculated great-circle bearing with a practical check on a map or compass.

Use your precise location

A city-centre bearing is a useful starting point. For the most precise result, allow the finder to use your current coordinates or search for your address. Even within one city the exact angle can change slightly.

Read the bearing from true north

A bearing is measured clockwise from true north. For example, 118° means start at north, turn clockwise past east, and continue another 28° toward the south-east.

Verify before prayer

Phone compasses can be disturbed by metal, magnets and electronics. Hold the phone flat, move away from interference and compare the compass with the map line or a known street direction.

  • Use exact coordinates where possible
  • Calibrate the device compass
  • Check the result against the map
  • Use a local mosque's established direction when available
